The Indian River Lagoon has produced many world record Seatrout. These fish can be taken on fly, artificial, and live bait. The abundant grass flats of the Lagoon provide optimum conditions for really large fish. Light tackle spinning in the 6 to 8 lb. class provides a real challenge for any angler.

The Treasure Coast offers a great variety of gamefish. A day on the water may include tangling with Flounder, Pompano, Jack Crevalle, Redfish, Snook, Tarpon, Bluefish, Barracuda, Croaker, Ladyfish, Triple Tail, Sheepshead, Moonfish, Grouper and Black Drum, along with many varieties of Snapper.

The proximity of the Gulfstream and near shore reefs to the St. Lucie Inlet allow for many pelagic and reef fish to be encountered close to shore, including Barracuda, Groupers, and Snappers.
The St. Lucie Inlet is also well known for its spectacular Snook fishing. Summertime catch and release Snook fishing is regarded as a first class fishing experience throughout the state of Florida.

One of the most challenging fly fishing opportunities along the Treasure Coast is sight fishing for very large Jack Crevelle in near-shore waters. Fish of 15 to 20 lbs. are not unusual, and a few of enormous proportions prowl the waters. Additional fly fishing opportunities include night-time fishing for Snook under lighted docks and area bridges. Pompano fishing, with mole crab imitations, and winter time Spanish Mackerel fishing is second to none in the state of Florida. These aggressive fish are easily targeted with flashy patterns and sinking fly lines. Spanish Mackerel are real speedsters and provide great sport on 8 or 9 weight outfits. Truly colossal schools of them can be found relatively close to the shoreline.

At Stormy Petrel Fishing Charters we will tie just the right fly for the conditions. Bait fish and shrimp imitations work the best, however, you can be assured that whatever conditions prevail, we'll have the right fly, or bait, for the job.

Jensen Beach Local Area

Indian River Lagoon

The Indian River Lagoon (IRL) is a 155 mile long waterway stretching from Daytona Beach to Jupiter along Florida's east coast. This prolific water body and surrounding lands have been called North America's most diverse estuary. Almost as long as Chesapeake Bay, the lagoon is home to 1,350 plant species, 2,956 animal species, and 310 bird species. The lagoon is also home to fully one-third of Florida's manatee population.

The IRL is uniquely situated in a transitional area between the temperate and tropical zones, and it is accessed by five separate inlets, from the Ponce Inlet in the north to the Jupiter Inlet in the south. These inlets allow oceanic fish species to seek refuge and propagate their young in the protective waters of the lagoon.

Originally settled by the Ais Indians, huge shell mounds, or middens, are still found today along the banks of the lagoon, including Jensen Beach. Early settlers found traveling along the lagoon essential to commerce and homesteading throughout the far reaches of southern Florida. The essential components of the lagoon are it's extensive mangroves and sea grasses. These plant species provide the shelter and food source necessary for a vibrant marine ecosystem. The IRL has multiple species of sea grass, including Manatee, Turtle, and the rare Johnson grasses.

The ocean beaches of the lagoon region provide refuge for one of the largest sea turtle populations in the western hemisphere. In addition, the beach ecosystem is the only home for the Atlantic Salt Marsh Snake. The IRL is on the Atlantic flyway and it contains 20% of the U.S. seaboard mangroves. The most visited state park (Sebastian Inlet State Park) in Florida, and four others, are found in the IRL region. The IRL also includes three aquatic preserves containing some 20,000 acres in the Jensen Beach to Jupiter geographic area. This magnificant estuary and its' inhabitants, including Mantees, Ospreys, Egrets, Pelicans, Roaseate Spoonbills, and Frigate Birds are some of the species you are likely to encounter during a day aboard the Stormy Petrel.

Stormy Petrel Fishing Charters operates an ActionCraft 1720 Flyfisher S.E. flats skiff powered by an Evinrude Ficht 115 HP outboard motor and a Minnetonka trolling motor. When the water is skinny and the fish spooky, we'll push you, if necessary, with a Stiffy push pole!! We are U.S Coast Guard licensed, insured, and carry the latest safety equipment. I have been fishing the Stuart - Jensen Beach area since 1983 including many hours spent pitching baits into the surf, prowling the catwalks under area bridges, and wading the spoil islands and grass flats. My tournament experience includes two 1st place finishes in the SSFA inshore series championships of 1997 and 1998, along with numerous 2nd and 3rd place finishes in tournaments and fishing club events. I am a former IGFA world record holder for Fat Snook (centropomus parallelus), and I currently hold four West Palm Beach Fishing Club record fish in the Spinning and Fly Fishing categories. I am an active member of the IGFA, CCA, and West Palm Beach Fishing Club. Above all, I enjoy spending my time on the water and sharing my knowlege with anglers of all ages and skill levels.

CCA

The Coastal Conservation Association (CCA) is a non-profit, largely volunteer organization dedicated to the protection of marine resources. Formed in 1977 by 14 concerned anglers in Texas, the CCA now has chapters nationwide and stands shoulder to shoulder with recreational anglers in the struggle for equitable allocation of marine resources. CCA has been involved in many issues including the fight for gamefish status of redfish, the Florida net-ban amendment, removal of fish traps from federal waters, support of a seatrout restoration plan, implementation of the unified Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission, support of the longline agreement to protect billfish, became a sponser of the "Freedom to Fish" act, and restoration efforts including the planting of 20,000 mangroves along the Indian River Lagoon.
